Master Series “Kathy Hubble” Master 4 Purple Badass and Human
Kathy’s awards and achievements are too long to cover in just one article: Judo black belt; 3rd degree; 7-time Canadian champ; retired at 19; stunt performer for 25 years in 100 feature films. Rejoined Judo at age 45; won 15 golds in her returning year including Abu Dhabi Judo Masters World Championships. Started BJJ at the end of 2015 and already sweeping European Worlds, and Worlds Masters. And in September of this year Kathy launched a new business.
Kathy is a proven superhero. The kind you see on TV and wish that was you!
And all superheros have challenges. The struggle for perfection. The drive for gold. The expectation to win. The inner talk. It can all be a greater pressure than the color of belt around your waist.
Kathy is a 3rd degree black belt in Judo. Judo is 90% stand up. It’s all about take downs vs BJJ which is 90% ground and submissions. Because Kathy is a Judo black belt she was automatically given a blue belt within her first BJJ month!
So, she threw herself into BJJ just like any other endeavor. Kathy doesn’t do slow or easy. She is a performer. An athlete. A coach. A stunt-performer. A wife. An entrepreneur. A badass. And her expectations to not only perform but to win drive her to train as if she is always competing for Olympic gold.
But what happens behind the scenes is real life. It’s not just the on screen gold medal winning performer. It’s Kathy’s struggling with her marriage and insecurities that makes us fall in love with her. Kathy was generous to give Elevate a look into her personal life and willing to share because she knows how important it is for others to hear her story and to know we are not alone.
Before we go any further, Kathy’s marriage is stronger than ever! But it wasn’t always that way. Her drive to perform at the highest level possible caused her to dive head first into BJJ in 2015 with a new found excitement and intensity. Imagine walking into your first BJJ month of classes and be given a blue belt! The pressure to perform early on coupled with her insatiable drive for gold consumed her. While not out of character for Kathy, it did put a huge strain on her marriage. A strain she would endure because she was not willing to give up the sport. It took counseling to eventually develop a newfound respect for each other and turn her husband from hating her new BJJ life to fully supporting her and helping her get ready for tournaments.
Many of us juijiteira know the feeling when the sport becomes life and the struggles you face when those you love don’t understand or support it.
Performance fear is something else Kathy struggles with and was willing to share with Elevate. It can be so bad it is debilitating at times. From the outside, you would think all of the wins she has attained over the years would give her great confidence. But on the inside, it is a painful struggle of severe self-doubt that can be completely paralyzing. But as painful as it is, she is always able to get herself to a place to push through.
We appreciate Kathy for being so open with us about the challenges she faces.
We also want to give Kathy a huge congratulations on launching her new company NTB Fight Gear, “Home of THE NEVER-TIE BELT”. She is so dedicated to the Judo and BJJ community she founded NTB Fight Gear to distribute her premier product, THE NEVER-TIE BELT, to help ease the frustrations experienced during the early stages of learning and allow the focus to be on the lessons and technique – not on the clothing. We encourage you to check it out and support her.
Yes she is a badass.
Yes she is human.
And we love her for everything she is doing on and off the mats.
